Ok so in one of my posts, LONG LONG time ago, I mentioned that I would tell you about my trip to New York. I have not blogged in a long time because I have been busy moving, transitioning to a new job, and the biggest time consumer, traveling!!! So as I am preparing for birthday travels, I decided I would take a ride through memory lane.
So let me tell you what had happened!!! I have this super cool friend. We’ve been friends since Kindergarten!!! Thats over 20 years!!! So my friend and I decided we needed to take a little vacation. We chose the great state of New York! Because I am from the South, I had preconceived ideas about New York.
This blog will explain some things that I learned while in there.
Here are a few things that New York taught me:
- People are really nice there!! Unlike the general misconception of southerners, northerners are actually very nice. I was very shocked at the amount of doors held open, random guys giving up their seats on public transportation or even offering to carry my suitcases to where I was headed. So basically I have come to the understanding that northerners are just “bout that life”. If you can’t “jump in where you fit in” then you need to “keep it moving”! That’s not being rude, thats basic rules of life.
- Use Uber!! Uber is like ballin on a budget. If you live there and don’t have a car or don’t want to drive, you can drive in style. You can pick up a date in an Uber or go somewhere fancy in an Uber. We used Uber for everything!!! I’m not trying to take anything away from the standard yellow cab but Uber is pretty nice. If you are very frugal like me, you will have to use coupon codes fore very ride. We stayed there for a week and probably spent a total of $50 for Uber transportation. Thanks coupons!!!!
- Food!!! There is so much good food!!! I LOVE food!! Like for real!! I will be shopping for clothes and be like hmmmm, only $20 left, what shall I do? I will put down whatever clothing that I had and use that $20 for food!! I’m just saying, I LOVE to eat!! In New York, I was always eating!! I loved the fact that food was soooo good. It seemed as if every type of food, Thai, Indian, Medeterrian was cooked as if they were in their own home country. The kicker was when I noticed that there were several 24 hour food places!!!! Like down south we have the options of Waffle House an IHOP but there I had so many more options! Can you tell that I love food???
- Thou shall tip while in New York. So I have my theory on tipping. I am the person who tips for everything but I always leave the situation wondering why did I just tip?? My theory about tipping, don’t judge me, but DON’T NOBODY TIP ME AT MY JOB!!!! Am I really supposed to tip the delivery man?? All he did was drive the food to me!!! If I should tip anybody it should be the cook!! So here’s the situation: The delivery man legit got mad at me and told me he would never service me because he works too hard to not be tipped. I was like dude, YOU ONLY DROVE THE FOOD TO ME!!! AND YOU WERE AN HOUR LATE!!! Ohh and let me tell you! There was another time me and some friends decided to enjoy our best life and go to this restaurant and the waitress was super rude to us. She lied to me about not having a particular item on the menu. But then she serves it to some people across the restaurant. Like for real for real, we had to call the manager on her. So long story short, we get everything sorted out and we are getting ready to leave, no one tips her except for my dear friend. The girl comes back to pick up the receipts and she is looking for her tips. This chic is straight up reading the receipts and then yells out, ” SO YALL AINT GONNA TIP ME?”. My friend, who is definitely going to heaven after this incident, calmly explains the reason for the no tip and then explains why she decided to tip her! She wasn’t happy with that so the manager had to come and calm her down. Of course being a good manager, he apologizes and gives us some discounts. But after those two incidents, I was like DANG!!! THOU SHALL TIP WHILE IN NEW YORK!
- Spending $200 on tennis shoes up north versus down south is a major difference. For me that is a lot of money to spend on shoes period! But what I learned from being up there is that, you get your $200 worth by just walking everywhere!!! I finally understood why it was ok to spend that much on shoes. Also, the money spent on shoes in addition to all the walking that is required in New York will grant you nice toned legs. I promise my legs looked different by time I made it back home.
- If it seems too good to be true, It is too good to be true! So during the trip, we stayed in Brooklyn. Brooklyn is very nice but we wanted to stay in Manhattan for the latter part of the trip. So we booked a hotel that looked super nice online, great ratings and reviews, the people were nice when we arrived and everything seemed well. We entered the room, chilling, talking, having a good ole’ time, you know doing what girls do. All was well until I began to notice something odd out the corner of my eye. Of course there are things we all see in the corner of our eyes but not like this. Come to find out, the small things I was seeing was real and they were bed bugs!! Bed Bugs!! For real?! We have never packed up so fast in our lives!!! So you can only imagine what happened. I made my way to the front desk to handle business! Talk about being upset?! I’m trying to be calm and everything was going ok until she opened her mouth. The receptionist precedes to tell me that they have been having a bed bug issue and that she is not surprised that we had them. I could have lost my mind! So I’m trying to figure out what to do. Like do I go all Angry Black Woman or do I maturely handle this situation. Well there were a few people behind me who were trying to figure out what was going on because they could tell that I was upset. So I calmly said, “Yes there are bed bugs here”. I then called a caba and we left. Yes we did eventually get our money back! The sad thing is that they are a reputable company but apparently not this location. So lesson learned: If it seems too good to be true, it is too good to be true!
So there are my main points of what New York taught me. I cannot wait to go back soon! I had way too much fun.
