Cool, Calm, Collect, Persevere

So this year has taught me a lesson, how to calm down, be cool, and persevere. Especially with my attitude. Sometimes someone can say something to me and I’m like…WHAT????? But my current job is teaching me patience and how to choose my words wisely. I think I did a pretty good job this time.

So let me tell you what happened to me. I am on this journey trying to figure out what is next. Well applying for school has been on my mind lately. Thinking about working on a Doctorate. Why? Girl I don’t know.

Well while I was on this journey, I realized that I needed to know if I had taken a certain class in my undergrad career. Realizing that I did not have a transcript available, and I needed the information ASAP, I called my alma mater. Well the conversation goes a little like this:

OU: Good afternoon, thank you for calling Oakwood University, how may I help you?

Me: Yes, hi, how are you this afternoon?

OU: I am fine. How may I assist you?

Me: Well, My name is Constance McGee, I graduated Spring 2010, majored in Biology.  I need some information. I was trying to obtain my transcript to look for a class but I will not receive it in time for what I need.

OU: Ok, can I get your name, Student ID and can you verify the telephone number, and street address please?

(I give her all the info)

OU: Thank you. I have your transcript, how may I assist you?

Me: So what I am needing is to know if I took ________ class in Spring 2010 or Fall 2009. I do not need a grade or teacher or anything, I just need to see if it is on my transcript.

OU: Well ma’am, I cannot give you that information.

Me: (trying to not get an attitude because she is doing her job and I just want what I want when I want it) Ok, can you explain to me why you cannot tell me if I took a class in Spring 2010 or Fall 2009?

OU: Well I am not a liberty to discuss anything on your transcript.

Me: (Woosah) Ok, that understandable but I am NOT asking you for a grade or anything, I just need to know if I took _______ class in Spring or Fall semester.

OU: Well the reason I cannot give you that information is because I am not sure who I am talking to.

( I just gave her all the information she needed to verify it was me earlier!!)

Me: ( In my Jay-Z voice) Allow me reintroduce myself. My name is…

OU: Well what if I am giving the information to a stranger.

Me: Well to be honest, I don’t know if you ACTUALLY work for OU or if you were passing by and happen to answer the phone. For all I know, because I cannot see you, you are someone’s child waiting for you mom or dad to get off work. So in real life, we are both strangers to each other.

OU: Well said. Yes, you did take ______ class in Spring 2010.

Me: Thank you SUSAN! Have a great day! ( To be honest, I can’t remember her name, I call everyone Susan if I don’t know their name. Sorry to the first black Susan I just met!)

Let me tell you, I know she was doing her job but I really needed that info. But she got me with the “she not sure who she talking to”.  Once that was said, I couldn’t be reasonable anymore. In my head, I was all Kevin Hart, You Gon’ Learn Today!

So all in all, this conversation taught me perseverance, and how to control my words!! HAHA There is a lesson in everything!
