From DRAB to FAB!!!

So as I posted earlier, there are some things about my house that were outdated and that I didn’t like. Well I have been making some changes to my room and my fan was not really fitting in. I did not want to pay alot of money to replace the lamp so I traveled on down to Pinterest!!!! (Oh how I love thee good ole Pinterest) Well I turned my 1960 looking fan to a more modern looking fan. It cost me only…drumroll please…$7!!!!! I was too excited! This project only took me an hour!!! So here you go…

(1) Lamshade

(2) Bottles of white spray paint

(1) Bottle of gold spray paint

(1) Roll of clear string

It was really simple. I unscrewed the blades and washed them down to remove any dust or dirt. I think wiped down the base. I didnt want to get all technical and unscrew it and touch wires. If I was painting it another color besides white, I would have. Well once everything was cleaned, I then sprayed the blades. It took two bottles because the blades were dark brown and it took awhile for the brown to not show. I then took a piece of board to block the spray from hitting the ceiling and residue from falling on my bed and sprayed the motor. The board, to me, wasn’t that helpful. If I do this project in another room I will try another method.

Once I got everything as white as I wanted it to get, I let the blades and the motor dry and I proceeded to the lampshade. I chose this lampshade simply because it was like $3! I figured if I messed up, it was only $3!!! I took the lampshade to the garage and I place it on some cardboard and went around and sprayed it evenly. I had to be careful because the lampshade is white and I didn’t want to over spray it and the shade become too dark causing a light restriction.

As soon as the blades dried, I screwed them back in and proceeded to figure out how to put the lampshade on. I got some clear wire from Lowes, and tied a knot onto each screw that stuck out from the circular part of the fan that holds and fastened it to the wires on the lamshade. This was kinda hard fro me because the clear wire kept slipping and you want it to be even or you will have a lopsided (yes I said LOPSIDED lol) lampshade!! Even after all the tutorials I googled, I still had to finger my way through it by myself. The end result is that it turned out perfect!

See how ugly this was??!!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new lamp!

Oh by the way, I bought new strings to pull to turn on the light and fan, and I sprayed them gold!!! Those were only $1 each! you cant really see them in the picture because they aren’t long enough. I guess I need to get some extenders.
